We got to the museum from Kyoto via train and bus. We purchased our tickets in the Kyoto train station the day before. Our outbound ticket was from Kyoto to Ishiyama and the return was from Ishiyama to Kyoto to Kansi Airport in Osaka. Kyoto to the museumThere is an express and a local train from Kyoto station to Ishiyama station. The Express runs every 15 minutes most of the day -- including Sundays. It makes two stops en route and takes 13 minutes. Our ticket was ¥460 or about $3.25 each way. There is a regularly scheduled local bus from Ishiyama station to the museum. There is a small bus terminal at the station. The bus is number 150 and has the destination in Japanese and English: MIHO MUSEUM. Hold up your blue museum brochure and someone will see that you get on the right bus. This is a local bus. People get on and off along the way. Our ticket was ¥800 or $5.75 each way. The bus ride takes 50 minutes. The first bus of the day leaves Ishiyama at 9:10 to get you to the museum in time for the opening at 10:00. The bus drops you off a short walk from the entrance to the museum. Museum to KyotoThe return bus picks up passengers near the entrance -- not where they drop you off. Fifty minutes back to the train station. Catch the next train. If it is an express, 13 minutes later you are back in Kyoto. (The local takes 20 minutes.)It is a short, clearly marked walk to the train to Kansai. Additional access information including the current bus schedule is available from the museum's site. Kyoto to KansaiThe train from Kototo Kansai Airport -- Osaka's International airport -- is called the Haruka. It takes about an hour and fifteen minutes. On-board there is a brochure that describes the train and its service. Two items worthy of note:
The announcement concerning the trains stops and final destination are all in both Japanese and English. In additon to the announcements, an information board will provide information in both languages."
The HARUKA is the train which has female conductors. The conductors are in charge of passenger service, commiting themselves to first-rate service." There are lockers on the second floor of the Kyoto station. We left our back packs there and then waited for Cafe du Monde to open at 8:00 a.m. The literature on the table implied it is the same Cafe du Monde as the one in New Orleans. Coffee, tea and scones. The sign said beignets; but they didn't have any. We had plenty of time to caught an 8:30 train. Another option would have been to catch an earlier train and have a light breakfast at Mr. Donut across from the the Ishiyama station. They open at 8:00. On the return, we showed our tickets to the guard and went back into the lobby of the train station. We had an afternoon ice cream, picked up our back packs and then back onto the Kansai train for our next adventure.
