Lyon, Popanz & Forester

Our Name:

There is no:
Leo Lyon
Peter Popanz of
Fred Forester

Lyon, Popanz & Forester is a created name. Mostly, it is a way to avoid the sort of ego trip that leads to names like: Joe Founder & Associates (too informal) or Joseph T. Founder & Associates (no one ever calls him Joseph and it sounds stuffy). We looked for something clever that describes what we do and allows some flexibility for the future. The good names were taken, and even if we found one we realized we would have to fight to protect it. So we decided to have some fun and just make up a name.

Our original criteria:

The first name had to be easy to spell so clients could find us in the phone book
It had to sound professional
It had to be unique enough that it is VERY unlikely that anyone else would have it
It had to have a story that is easy to tell and make it easier to remember

Lyon, Popanz and Forester are the three secondary characters in the Wizard of Oz. "Lyon" is of course the lion. "Popanz" is German for scarecrow -- we would have preferred the French translation but "epouvantail" just wouldn't work. And, thanks to the effectiveness of our coaching services, the tin woodman was promoted to a "Forester."

There is no Leo Lyon, Peter Popanz or Fred Forester, but Hal Amens will be pleased to discuss your opportunities and our resources.

New & Additional Criteria

A name should also lend itself to reasonable searches in the various Internet search engines -- this is obviously a new criteria since we have been in business since before the Internet was used by anyone other than serious teckies. An associate used his initials -- LPH. A search in Yahoo lead to a long list of sites that include Ralph in their name plus his site.

At least our initials -- lpf -- lead to a long list of sites that include the word helpful which is much better than Ralph, unless you happened to be named Ralph. Yahoo also found the League for Programming Freedom, the Libertarian Party of Florida and there used to be a company selling license plate frames and several references to the movie Pulp Fiction.

A recent addition: ecologically correct urinals that say "3.8 LPF 1.0 GPF" Translated: Liters Per Flush. Some days pigeon, some days statue. And technology marches on. Falcon Waterfree Technologies offers a urinal that requires no water and they don't even bother to note zero LPF.

We recently had some confusion about our email address and have found the following variations:

Other variations include hyphenation:
Lijst Pim Fortuyn (List Pim Fortuyn) is a political party in the Netherlands. Pim Fortuyn began organising the party on February 11, 2002, the day after he had been dismissed as lijsttrekker (head of the list of candidates) by the Leefbaar Nederland party. We are not proud of this one because of Google headlines like: Alert!: LPF dominates silly season.

LPF Diffusion S.A. à Genève uses www.atn-diffusion-lpf.com

LPF An acronym for Low-Pass Filter. A signal filter which would be installed in a customer premises ADSL modem which would not modify the low frequencies present in its input signal (the POTS transmission is sent unmodified to a phone), but does prevent the high frequency components (data) from reaching a customer’s telephone. We recently received the following information about Fred Forester: "Hello... just found you while searching my father's name. See there's no relation with your Fred... but if you want to claim a connection you have my permission. My Fred was born in Oklahoma in 1912 and died in Texas in 1984. I'm his only daughter and I know he'd really like to think he had found an extended family.... maybe he can move into some of your own white space." We now consider him part of the family and he is welcome to share our space.

Earlier we received an inquiry about the possibility that we were a member of the Popanz family. It seems "Johann Popanz came to America in 1869 with three daughters and settled in Albany Wisconsin. There are now more than 800 members of his family." With that large a group, there is bound to be a Peter Popanz, but he is not associated with our firm.
