 Northwest to San Juan

In August 1996, we did a five day bicycling and campling trip with Bicycle Adventures in the San Juan Islands off the coast of Seattle Washington.

Itinerary

Los Angeles to Seattle
One day hiking on Mount Renier with friends
Seattle to Anacortes by van then ferry to San Juan Island on Monday
Ferry to Orcas Island on Wednesday
Ferry to Lopex Island and then back to Anacortes and Seattle on Friday
A Leisurely (recovery) day in Seattle on Staurday
Seattle to Los Angeles Sunday

The border between the western U.S. and Canada was defined in the Oregon Treaty of 1846 as the 49th parallel, extending to the middle of the channel which separates the continent from Vancouver Island and then southerly through the middle of the channel and the Straits of Juan de Fuca. The San Juan Islands lie south of the 49th parallel and east of Victoria Island--tucked in a notch in the northwest corner of the United States. There are 72 islands, several large ones and many smaller ones. Our trip took us from Anacortes to San Juan Island then to Orcas Island then to Lopez Island and then back to Anacortes.

Map of the San Juan Islands

A Bicycle Adventures van picked up some of us at the Seattle ariport at about 9 a.m. A second van picked up people at downtown hotel and a the remainder of our group met us at the Majestic Hotel in Anacores. Anacortes is about 80 miles north of Seattle on the first of the San Jauan islands. The island is linked to the mainland by a bridge on the east and to the San Juan Islands and Canada by ferries to the west.

More to come, of course.

Miscellaneous

A quick dinner at Wolfgang Puck's in United Airline's terminal at LAX -- overpriced, ordinary "fast food." Made airline food look good...
